Round 17 of the Driver Network Championship took us back to the UK, to the beloved Brands Hatch GP circuit in the Renault Clip Cup car.
After the technical challenge of racing Formula A cars at Sakitto in Round 16, this week was a change of pace for the drivers with more emphasis on driver skill due to there being far fewer tuning setup variables for the hot hatchback and a lot less downforce than an open wheel car! The Clio’s front wheel drive layout put big demands on the drivers’ patience as well with temptation to get on the gas as early as possible coming out of the corners, at the rest of potentially pushing the car out wide, ruining your line.
Many of the top drivers fell foul of this this week, especially on the exit of turn 3 (Graham Hill bend) where they were caught out by putting all four wheels on the astroturf outside of the rumble strips. This opened the door for the more consistent teams to dominate the standings in Round 17.
The next round of the SMS-R Driver Network Championship takes us back to Belgium’s iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit for a re-run of the postponed Round 11. The racing starts on November 6.
13 OCTOBER UPDATE - Due to a miscalculation, it was previously reported that the top two driver standings had swapped place. This was incorrect and has now been updated in the article above.
